Influenced by Latin Jazz masters Dafnis Prieto and Horacio Hernandez, these lessons will get us playing bass drum and snare comps and odd groupings with clave on our hi-hat foot (optional) and cascara pattern on our ride.

Our independence will first be challenged as we play through the Groups of Four (as 8th notes) using the following guidelines:

  • Rests are interpreted as bass drum strokes
  • Notes are interpreted as snare

Once you master this exercise over the Groups of 4, proceed to apply the same idea to Groups of 3, 5 and 7!

Lay some ground work for Latin independence in Cuban styles with exercises inspired by the musical drumming of Horacio Hernandez.
